Readers of Rough Guides have been asked to vote for the most beautiful country in the world, with New Zealand coming in third.

Rough Guides, which produces travel guides, said "there is nothing like an amazing view to inspire you to book your next trip, whether you're drawn by rolling countryside, isolated islands or soaring mountain peaks".

Described as having "rolling green hills, majestic mountains, breathtaking fjords and amazing diversity of landscape from one island to the next," New Zealand beat out the likes of Italy, Iceland and South Africa in the affections of voters.

So which countries took out the top two spots? Well Canada's "raw beauty and majestic landscapes" sneaked into second, with Scotland claiming the top prize.

Rough Guide asked "who can deny that these wild beaches, deep lochs and craggy castles are some of the most wonderful and beautiful sights in the world?"

Speaking to the The Independent, Malcolm Roughead, chief executive of VisitScotland, hopes the title will encourage more visitors.

"We are delighted that Scotland has received this remarkable accolade from Rough Guide readers, but of course it will not be a surprise to anyone who has encountered our wonderful country.

"From our awe-inspiring landscapes to our remarkable historic attractions, to our bustling but beautiful urban centres, Scotland takes people's breaths away."
