The hut is set up as a romantic retreat, approximately 2km from our home. It is completely private and a special place where you will find rest, repair, beautiful views, clean air and plenty of wildlife. We are happy to leave you alone and respect your privacy, it would also be our pleasure to show you around. It's totally up to you!

COME OUT ON THE FARM, we milk our cows once a day, and we'd be happy to show you our operation - if you're really keen you can even milk a cow or two!
We can also take you to the meet the horses and take a farm stroll with our friendly dogs. You will see/hear wildlife: such as hares, rabbits, possums, moreporks, kiwis, wild goats, and native birds. (deer and wild pigs sometimes present themselves as well!). In February the blackberries are out and you are welcome to pick them.

BRING YOUR BIKE and ride the approx. 10km to the old Okoki School and have a swim in the school pool. The roads are narrow and windy, they are very quiet but it is important to keep to the left and listen out for traffic (vehicles may not see you).
You can also cycle/drive to the end of our road. It continues on for another 10kms to where the Urenui River starts as a small stream. There is plenty of animal life, whether it's wild or domesticated to see along the way. (horses, ducks, geese, goats, cows to name a few)

WE HAVE A WALKING TRACK through the bush, along the ridge line. When our valley was first settled in the late 1800s, there was no road, and the settlers rode along a bridal path over the ridge, and came into the valley near our property. The mind boggles on what the early settlers endured! - It is very important to keep to the track, as there are steep bluffs and drop offs. Generally the walk is easy, although there are some gnarly parts to climb up and down.

REWA HUT'S UNIQUE LOCATION means that the drive up is steep. Because of this we will drive you up from our home and drop you off there. Or if you are confident you can follow us up in your own 4WD. If you are going to walk you need to be fit, as the last 300m will certainly get the blood pumping! Once you are up there, I can assure you, you won't want to come back, you're in your own world!

There is mobile telephone reception if you climb to the top of the hill. The hut also has 30GB of free wifi. Although I recommend disconnecting!

Other places you may want to check out:

PEIHANA FARM. 281 Okoki Road, Urenui; Maria caters for intimate gatherings where she has garden to table meals. Peihana Farm is a working farmlet, where many workshops are facilitated. Workshop and catering enquiries to PeihanaFarm@gmail.com or 027 232 5554.

URUTI TUNNEL, The Uruti or Kaka Road tunnel was constructed between 1916 and 1923 and it links the two roads through a steep ridge. It is one of the 22 tunnels in Taranaki. The Kaka Road forks off from the Okoki Road. The drive would take approx. 22 minutes to the tunnel. If you chose to do the loop drive via Uruti, and back along the main road, it would take just over an hour to get back to REWA Hut. It's certainly worth it and very scenic, we have taken visitors in the past on this drive to see the tunnel, carried onto Uruti and then you can stop in at the 487 Estate on State Highway 3 for a craft beer, coffee or meal before heading home to REWA Hut.

BEACHES!
- We are 20-25 minute drive to the West coast, and are spoiled for choice. I recommend driving to the Urenui Beach Camp, Once on Beach Road you will pass the Urenui Golf Club, which is a challenging 9 hole course with sea, river and motor camp boundaries. A quality course suitable for golfers of all levels.
At the Campsite there is a great spot to park under the trees, and head down to where the Urenui River meets the sea, follow the river around to the beach. It's great for swimming, and famous for the URENUI MUD FLATS, where you can swim across the river and have a head to toe mud bath! The Camp has a good shop selling ice-cream and fish and chips in the summer months. You can also take a short walk across the golf course to the swing bridge and cross the Urenui River. A stroll up the hill will bring you out by Yandle Park, then a short walk to the Urenui Village.
- Wai-iti Beach is our family favourite! It is a 30 minute drive from Rewa Hut. It is off Pukearhue Road, where the country side is picture perfect, green gentle rolling hills and our majestic Mt Taranaki is usually in full view showing herself off. The beach is safe to swim in, and a great stroll to the caves at the northern end. There is a Cafe operating most months of the year. The scenery from the beach is spectacular as you can see New Plymouth in the distance. It is also the home of Blue Penguins, they come ashore in June to nest, purpose built boxes have been hidden for them to nest in.

WHITE CLIFF WALKWAY is also superb, a 35 minute drive away. Dramatic coastal scenery, black sand beaches and regenerating native forest are key features along this popular walkway. Make sure you check tide times before you go - as some of the walk is along the beach. The walkway is closed from July 1st - September 30th for lambing. Time: 5hr one way (to Tongaparutu) 4hr loop track via Wai Pingau Stream. Search ' DOC whitecliffs walkway' for more details.

ONAERO BAY; 2.5kms north of Urenui Village is another great place to discover. The Onaero River runs into the ocean at Onaero Bay and is surrounded by native bush. There is a very quiet and picturesque Holiday Park with manicured grounds and children's playground. A great spot to explore or pack a picnic!

HORSE TREKKING; Bill Newton at Adventure Horse Treks is a local legend. He specialises in western riding and breeds his own quarter horses. The horses are used for their open range cow work on the 2000 acre property. As the crow flies, Bill's property neighbours ours, although to get to him you have to drive out of the valley, and the long way around to get to Matapo Road. I have ridden a few times with Bill and this experience is highly recommended. Even if you have never been on a horse, Bill will teach you before you set off. You'll be riding the high country which is at the back of REWA Hut, It is a must do!

A short history of Rewa Hut.

Inspired by George Clark’s Amazing Spaces and other similar programmes on TV, Paul had a vision to build himself a hut. He had chosen a site on the bush boundary, and built a one room man cave which was completed in 2013. .
We would camp up there often, cook on an outside gas cooker, play music, listen to the radio or simply just enjoy silence. It was especially good when our dairy cows were grazing in the closes paddocks, so we could wake up a bit later then walk them to the cow shed!

In 2018 we decided to extend and added another room from existing hut. Paul purchased two (second-hand) bi-fold windows, with a vision that they would open right out to see the valley and pasture below on the Eastern side and the bush below on the Western side. The plan was locked in his head and he designed the build around the two windows. We dismantled an old barn, used native timber from our woolshed and 90 percent of materials were upcycled and reused with what was lying around.

REWA Hut is Off the Grid and powered by 9 Solar Panels, storing the energy into 8 batteries. We installed infinity gas for instant hot water, fully insulated it to make it cosy, and moved the fire place into the new living room.
Three Rewa Rewa Trees stand tall and guard the hut like sentries. So we named her REWA Hut.

About the Landowner, Robyn

Hi, I'm Robyn O'Leary. My husband, Paul and I, are now Empty Nesters. We've lived in the Okoki Valley for over 20 years. Together we operate a very small, sustainable dairy farm, milking 100 cows, once a day. We also breed thoroughbred horses, and every year from August - November, I'm busy rearing our Angus beef calves that are born on our farm.
Paul and I love the outdoors and farm life, so when friends and family came to stay we would always take them for a farm walk, which meant exploring the streams and hiking to the highest point to enjoy the views.
We look forward to having you stay.
