Bushy Park Homestead in Whanganui is a Category One heritage building and has been preserved very much in its original state. Dedication to preserving period features, and the properties significant historic importance, has seen the rooms reflect the style and ambiance of its early years. Beautiful wood paneling, open fireplaces, bay windows and antique furniture feature throughout, while retaining the cozy, comfortable and homely feel the guests enjoy.

Bushy Park Bird Sanctuary
Bushy Park is considered by Forest and Bird to be among the 25 best restoration ecology projects in Australia and New Zealand. Featuring some of New Zealand's spectacular native bird life, the Sanctuary is home to such species as the Hihi (Stitchbird) and the Tieke (Saddleback). You may also be able to spot the diminutive Toutouwai (North Island Black Robin), and the majestic Kereru (NZ Wood Pigeon).
Listen out for the beautiful song of the Tui, Korimako (Bellbird), and Ruru (Morepork), while finding yourself in the company of the well-known locals such as Fantails, Kingfishers, Black Swans, Mallards, Pukeko, Silvereye and many more.
A number of successful releases of native bird species within the protection of the predator-proof fence have been undertaken, including North Island Brown Kiwi, North Island Robins and Saddlebacks. A revegetation project in the wetland area has commenced, extending the bird's natural environment.
- The entry fee is only $10.00 per adult while children 15 years and under, and "Friends of Bushy Park" are free. This gives you access to the homestead, the homestead grounds and the forest.
- Summer opening hours from December to April are 10am to 3pm during the week and 10am to 5pm at weekends and holidays.
- Winter opening hours for the forest from May to November are 11am until 4pm daily but closed on Mondays.

Bushwalks
Bird NZ, sanctuaryBushy Park gives you a choice of 10 tracks through the forest area varying in length from 5 minutes to 2 hours. Well signposted near the homestead, the walks are well-formed and fairly flat ensuring your hikes or wanderings are very enjoyable.
Bushy Park boasts a range of vegetation from farmland to mature Rimu-Matai forest and is home to the biggest Rata tree in the North Island. Known as 'Ratanui' (meaning "Big Rata") it is estimated to be between 500 and 1000 years old. The revegetation project undertaken by Forest & Bird Society members in the wetland area has included planting such species as Rimu, Pukatea, Mahoe, Karamu, Hangehange, Pigeonwood, Kawakawa, NZ flax and Toetoe.
