Highlights

Opportunities to see native New Zealand birds
Experience silence and solitude in native NZ bush
Private access to our wetland walk

We operate our business with the least environmental impact possible. We have planted forest restoration using locally sourced plants. We use our car as little as possible, preferring cycling. Our winter heating is mainly locally sourced firewood. We use natural cleaning products, our water supply is rainwater.

BIRDLIFE
Included in our tariff this season is a guided walk. We explain our history with this place and the natural history of the reserve. With some luck we may show you Matata (fernbirds). The Fernbird is the resident iconic bird of Bushy Point. They are locally common but notorious for being difficult to find. Our private track and boardwalk from our door takes you through the best habitat to see or photograph fernbirds. We give our guests the very best opportunities to get good views of Fernbirds using our knowledge of their behaviour gained in 20 years. Fernbirds can be seen all year but are more difficult in very windy conditions.
Tui and Bellbirds are resident in varying numbers all year. There are Silvereye, Fantails and occasional Brown Creeper. NZ Pigeon pass through. The Harrier Hawk roosts in the rushland and White faced Herons in the tall trees. Morepork are rare but can be seen. The nearby estuary has Spoonbills, Pied Stilts, Oystercatchers, Terns, Kingfishers and Godwits.
You may also walk the track and boardwalk on our pest protected reserve at your leisure. Recover from your journey in total peace and quiet.

ENVIRONMENT
Bushy Point Fernbirds B&B is on the edge of the New River Estuary. Our property has a sequence from podocarp forest with trees 400 years old to salt marsh which gives our walk a big variety of bird habitat in a 600 metre loop.
Our private reserve is part of a larger public reserve all of which is intensively trapped for pest control by volunteers including ourselves. The pest control has boosted the number of birds considerably. Fernbirds are now being found outside their normal range. The township of Otatara has an active pestbuster group which is also helping the bird population.
Our property is legally protected in perpetuity under a QEII Open Space covenant. It is also part of the Awarua Ramsar wetlands of international importance site.

We are secluded but only 10 minutes drive from Invercargill! We are close to the airport and 25 minutes from Bluff port both of which provide transport to Rakiura (Stewart Island).
We are 2.5 hours drive from Queenstown which is the closest international airport. All this makes it the perfect location for accommodation before or following Rakiura (Stewart Island) or the Catlins coast and Fiordland on the Southern Scenic route.

Reviews

Loved this place. You can walk around the property through forest and wetlands and observe a variety of native birds including the endangered Fernbird. The log fire was very welcome in the cold weather along with a bowl of chocolate. Its great to see people so passionate about caring for the environment.

We came here for a relax in nature and that is exactly what we got ... thank you for a lovely stay in paradise.

We loved meeting the owners and hearing how they restored the property and saved the unique habitats for the fern birds and brown creepers to name just a few! The bedroom was very comfortable, spotlessly clean and spacious! Breakfast was homemade and delicious! We really enjoyed the nature walk with Ian and learned a lot about birds, nature and New Zealand in general.
