FISHING
Enjoy private access to Lake Aniwhenua which is abundant in both Rainbow and Brown trout and can be fished all year round. The nearby Horomanga and Rangitaiki rivers are also wonderful spots to fish. The crystal clear waters of the Rangitaiki (also fishable year round) are ideal for both beginners and experts and trophy size fish can be caught. The adjoining Whirinaki river is also a favoured spot due to its stunning scenic surroundings.
Our local fishing guide Peter Hill has over 30 years experience and entertains anglers from all over the world. Should you wish, he can share with you his wealth of knowledge and take you to the best spots to help you enjoy the ultimate wilderness fishing trip.

RAFTING
The Rangitaiki river is a popular spot for white water rafting with a few different operators offering packages. The river combines spectacular scenery and 14km of great rapids. It is grade 3-4 and suitable for all active people ages 13 years and over. The Rangitaiki is the ideal river to 'get the hang of it' before hurtling yourself into the fast action of the Wairoa or Kaitua river. The meeting spot is in Murupara 20 minutes from the Old Shearers' Quarters.

Being based at the Old Shearers' Quarters gives you the opportunity for mountain biking in Whakatane, Taupo and of course the infamous Redwoods in Rotorua.

TRAMPING
Te Urewera hosts one of New Zealands Great Walks -Lake Waikaremoana - in the southern area of the park. There are also shorter walks available, Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tane Conservation Park has a range of walks from 1hr to 2-5 days.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE SHEARERS QUARTERS...
Built in the 1960s, the shearers quarters was designed to house the shearing gangs that would come to shear sheep on the part dairy part dry stock farm in Galatea.
It's hard to imagine the view back then before the creation of Lake Aniwhenua which didn't happen until 1980. The building was originally split in to four separate rooms for sleeping which were only accessible from the outside - a bit chilly to get to the bathroom in the winter months!
It has been through many incarnations and was at one time a budget lodge where fishermen would bunk down several to a room or camp in the grounds - this sparked the idea of using it as guest accommodation.
During the renovation we tried to preserve the building's character by keeping some of the original features.

- Boat hire is available for a charge per hour/day.
- A tour of our working 400 cow dairy farm is available at certain times of year (This must be pre-booked in advance).
- Hunting and fishing guides can also be booked through us.

About your host, Logan and Kate

Logan and I (Kate) met through mutual friends in 1999 when I traveled to New Zealand on holiday.

He had already been in Galatea for a couple of years share milking on the family farm. At the time I never anticipated still being here 17 years later - from London to Galatea is quite a change of lifestyle!

We both enjoy farm life and it is still a treat to wake up to the view of the serene lake and remarkable mountains.

It is a real joy meeting people from all walks of life and from all over the world. We have entertained guests from as far afield as the U.S.A, U.K, South Africa, France and Germany. It is truly a pleasure to provide somewhere nice for them to stay and to be able to share with them our little slice of paradise.
