We have two holiday houses on the farm: the Villa, which is the original farm house set in large grounds, and the Retreat, a 3 1/2 storey architect designed house built in the 1970s by my husband, an architect and a school teacher. The Retreat is very private, set in a stand of 1000 year old native trees.
People love to walk on the hills, swim in the river, play tennis, petanque, croquet, trout fish in the wider region... or just relax on the deck with a wine or beer .
Wi-Fi is freely available in both houses, as well as a good supply of firewood. There is a TV in the Retreat but not in the Villa (we tried to keep the Villa as authentic as possible, but with mod cons as well!).
Each house has a BBQ with gas bottle supplied. There's also a full kitchen and a laundry.
Please note, there is no check-in after 10pm.

We have tried to keep the villa as it was 100 years ago, but with the addition of modern amenities. There are two living rooms with open fires, and in the large living room there is a small pool table. There is no television reception, though there is a television for DVDs. There is also good free Wi-Fi. There is an ensuite bedroom with shower & toilet, a main bathroom with clawfoot bath and toilet, a separate shower room, and a third exterior toilet. Also a laundry with large washing machine.
Unique kiwi experiences for you
We have a horse stud on the property, owned by our son and daughter-in-law, so at certain times of the year there are foals to be visited.
We are 10 minutes from Awastone Rafting Centre and café, where you can have rafting or kayaking excursions, and enjoy a delicious bar meal at the Café.
We are on the Manawatu Scenic Route, which is also part of the Manawatu Cycle Way, between Mangaweka and Palmerston North.

Set in the scenic Manawatu/Rangitikei hill country, halfway between Rotorua and Wellington, we have a haven of peace and beauty. A real retreat from the city bustle, people love to wake to a chorus of birdsong, or be awed by the starry skies, unpolluted by light. There's so much history here, as the farm has been in the Sweet Family for 115 years, so guests love the feeling of permanence.
Great location, friendly helpful hosts, fascinating house with fabulous views. Had everything we needed for our 4 night stay to explore the region.

Our family group of 5 plus a toddler plus family dog had a very relaxing break away. We especially loved the huge lawns with the beautiful tall trees that provided cool shade on hot afternoons. The villa was quaint and quirky, very comfortable and spacious. We spent most of our indoors time in the very well equipped kitchen and dining room as 2 of our group found their allergies flared up when in the lounge. Unfortunately the rivers (on the farm and nearby) were unsuitable for swimming at this time, but we still had a great holiday. Our hosts were very welcoming - many thanks.

What a fantastic little getaway! Equal parts remote lighthouse and hobbit hole, it was the perfect getaway for two stressed teachers. Thanks so much to Sue, who even had the fire going for us when we arrived.

This rustic rural home was wonderful. Full of beautiful views, birdsong, steeped in nature. Anyone looking for a place with a pioneer feel but includes modern essentials this is it. Perfect for my time of solitude.
Debbie - Jun 2022
We wanted a break away from city life for a few days and our stay at the villa was perfect. The villa is beautiful, homely with lots of space just to relax. Cosy fire in the kitchen, playing games on the grass, sitting on the patio in the afternoon sun. If you want a holiday just to get away, catch up on reading, sleeping and most important, catch up on family time, you would love the villa

Lovely hosts, very hospitable and friendly. We went to the homestead for dinner one evening, and had a beautifully cooked restaurant class meal. Roamed the farm on foot, and were able to get up close to the beautiful horses and foals. Great photo opportunities everywhere. The accommodation is a slice of NZ history.

About your host, Sue
We, Sue & David, have been hosting people for 35 years. We are fortunate to have our son Matt and daughter-in-law Leonie, who have a Sport Horse Stud, now living on the farm, so it is really a family business. They help us with the hosting, taking total control during the winter months when David and I guide people in Europe. That is our "winter" business, but of course it will not be possible to travel there this year so we will be looking forward to hosting fellow New Zealanders here at home!
