This retreat is your home away from home! Guests are welcome to stroll in the gardens and enjoy the outdoors. There are numerous walks throughout the farm or you can take a walk in the nearby paddocks.
There are extensive grounds at the homestead with a very large old gum tree, reported being the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere (viewing by arrangement).
The Waikaretaheke river runs right through the farm, which flows from Waikaremona, your host, Jan will be very happy to show you where you might catch a fish!
Guests are often able to participate in the daily working of the farm and enjoy watching large mobs of cattle and sheep being moved. Feeding the pet animals delights guests, both young and old. In the spring there are often lambs and calves which require bottle feeding and are always happy for an extra feed to please the visitors! Chickens supply fresh eggs that our guests enjoy when supply allows. The farm dogs are also very appreciative of the attention they receive and are always up for an ear scratch and pat.
Some of the great experiences you can have are:
Visit the woolshed to watch sheep shearing, when shearers remove the wool from the sheep.
Enjoy a tour of the farm (when time allows), an 1100 acre property where the country changes frequently and offers stunning views including magnificent waterfalls.
Catch a glimpse of wild deer and the sun setting behind the impressive Panekire Bluff.
There are a variety of walks on offer meandering over farmland and through native bush. From short, easy walks to longer day walks there are stunning views, waterfalls, and maybe even a glimpse of wild deer. The restored wetlands are well worth a visit with lots of birdlife, including pukeko when they are in residence! Some of these walks require a guide while others are easy to access on your own.
Only half an hour away is the majestic Lake Waikaremoana set in the Te Urewera National Park, an amazing destination featuring the 3-4-day Great Walk and a range of day walks. Lake Waikaremoana and its surrounding bush is a beautiful and magical place and known as one of nature's best-kept secrets.

The Lodge epitomises peace and tranquillity. Nestled amidst secluded farmland this is the ideal retreat to escape from city life, while still having the luxury of home comforts. Guests love the privacy, peace and beautiful surroundings. In fact, the lodge is so private the nearest neighbours are the cows and sheep in the nearby paddocks. Adding to the ambience, are the resident Tui singing from the Gum tree, the New Zealand pigeon, (Kereru), that feed in the mulberry tree and the haunting, melancholy night time call of the Morepork, (owl).

This cottage is situated on one of the most beautiful farms you'll ever see...gorgeous scenery, peaceful, and some amazing old trees, including the largest gum tree in the southern hemisphere. Jan welcomed us with a few treats from the farm, even though her family was on holiday that week as well. Perfectly restful retreat!
Amazing and cute place with a beautiful view over the valley and a garden. With a lot of kitchen amenities and spark cleanness, this is the perfect retreat for when you're traveling or hiking around the area. Jan took care of all our needs and was a perfect host. Can totally recommend.
True new Zealand rural experience.

About your host, Jan
I am lucky enough to live in a beautiful part of New Zealand where my husband and I, farm our 1100 acre block. It is a sheep and beef farm and I choose to move the stock out the back of the farm by running there with my dogs, as I really enjoy seeing the amazing countryside and wildlife, hearing the birds, frogs and watching the seasons change, but the highlight for me is seeing some deer.
Of course it is not always easy and life is very busy on the farm especially in the hot summer moving lambs in the early morning or evening to avoid the heat. We have 2 mobs of bulls that need shifting daily and there are plenty of jobs to do.
The Lodge is a great part of my life, I love meeting the guests and being able to show them our piece of paradise, listening to their experiences, sharing their delight at the secluded location of the Lodge and offering them advice about the Waikaremoana area and walks.
We have 4 children, Hannah is 22 a compliance officer, Alex, 20, a diesel mechanic apprentice in Wairoa, William, 19, at Canterbury Uni and Claire 17, year 12 at Napier Girls. The house swells on the holidays and the children help on the farm when required. They are a great help at the Lodge and very capable of doing it on their own and enjoy chatting with the guests.
