Environmentally conscious farm only gentle / eco-friendly cleaning products are used & supplied.
Mobile reception is low inside the cabin, but free WiFi is provided.
Some board games, cards and books are also supplied. There is no TV.
Being off-grid means we are not connected to the national power grid & rely on solar / battery / generator support. Normal operation includes lighting, phone chargers, laptops, tablets, water pump, washing machine but no high-power appliances such as heaters, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, toasters (a camp toaster is available), or kettles (there is a gas stovetop billy).
If you need short-term use of a high draw appliance such as a hair dryer (or heated styler), iron, etc., please advise in advance we have an onsite generator to top up the batteries, and we need to monitor voltage more closely when such devices are in use.
Note: There is a gravel road & driveway of approximately 1.2 km from State Highway 22 to your cabin.
Walking (free) & Farm Tour (subject to availability & timing):
• ½ hr: $25 (1-2 pax)

A brief health & safety induction is required.
Requests for safe “livestock-free” walks & farm tours (via 3-seater ATV) need to be arranged at the time of booking.
Hot water bottles are supplied as they are the most energy-efficient and effective means of heating (so cosy!). Please refer to the safety / user instructions in the house manual to prevent burns see productsafety.govt.nz for guidance on using hot water bottles safely.
This is an operational dry-stock farm. Hazards, animals & farm vehicles / machinery will be present.
Expect farm noises & smells. Please be cautious. Do not feed the animals it can make them a nuisance or spoil their behaviour.
The fireplace is for winter use only (June, July, August), except by special request (firewood charge applies).
Duck-shooting season typically runs in May and can be noisy, particularly on the opening weekend. (Google the specific dates shooting usually begins at daybreak when there is no fog on the river.)
Compulsory weekly cleaning & maintenance ($45) & an additional heating fee in winter (wood / fuel) apply for longer stays please enquire.
There is a second cabin if you need another bed.
HOUSE RULES
Smoking is allowed, but only outside. An ashtray is provided please do not flick butts on the ground.
This is an operational farm, so all Health & Safety rules apply.
Sorry, we cannot accommodate pets due to other animals on the property and the cabin is not fully fenced.
Do not feed the animals they may become a nuisance or behave unpredictably. Animals can bite or kick, especially if food is around.
We use rain-tank water only, so please conserve water in summer.
Ensure gas oven / hob knobs are properly off after use (instructions are in the house manual).
The cabin is powered by solar panels and house batteries located at the main shed. Please do not use high-power appliances (standard devices like laptops, phone chargers, Bluetooth speakers are okay). If unsure, just ask no question is silly.
More people drown in rivers and lakes than in the ocean. Please be very cautious. I have life jackets if you’d like to do any water recreation ask for advice before entering the river.
Please refrain from cooking with ingredients that leave stubborn residues or odors which may linger and disturb future guests.

About your host, Rita
I am from a business back ground but I always wanted to be farming. I have been farming this 230acre drystock farm, on my own now, since 2012. Even though it is challenging I prefer it to the full time office work I undertook in my previous business. I like to farm with as little inputs (chemicals & fertiliser) as possible so I run low numbers on big land which is better for the land, the animals, myself and the bush and waterways. The cabins provide the income to allow me to go easy on the land by having the low numbers of livestock. I love sharing my little piece of paradise with others & believe everyone needs to get away for Rest & Restoration (R&R) from time to time. I hope to see you here at Riverside R&R soon.
